Craft Night

So my friend Manny and I recently decided to become old ladies and ditch the activities people our age usually partake in (clubbing? movies? staying up past 10:30?) and have a weekly CRAFT NIGHT! This makes me beyond happy and nostalgic. When I was growing up I always had a craft room filled with paints, glue, glitter, loo roll tubes (art attack anyone?), boxes, and random wooden doll heads from White Rose.  But now that I live in a small apartment with a husband who hates clutter and "junk" (read: my stockpile of craft supplies) I find it very difficult to craft to my hearts content as I once did. BUT this is about to change! So tonight we decided to make mini terrariums or as Manny calls them, "Terrums".

Dave and I went to our local nursery and talked to the most knowledgeable plant man ever.  He suggested we get an "air plant" which needs no soil and blooms hot pink and also gave us a big handful of reindeer moss for free. He was pretty awesome. (Thanks Spencer!)  Next Manny and I scoured Value Village and Goodwill for little trinkets to put in our terrariums. We ended up finding a big ziploc bag filled with little animals and wooden books (?) for a buck.

As you can probably tell, Manny spent much more time on hers than I did. Dude, she carved stairs out a piece of bark. That she found.

All in all, a lovely way to spend a Wednesday evening.

Library Haul (because I am too cheap to buy books)

Does anyone else get a thrill from going to the library? I still remember when my parents would take my brother and I to the library when we were younger and we were only allowed to get 3 books each and I thought this was so stingy.  3 books? That's IT?! I would always beg to get more, but my parents rarely budged. (This may or may not have to do with me always forgetting where I put my library books. Dave can speak to this today) Well now that I am all grown up I can take out as many books as I want! This still brings me great delight. Here's what I got today:

and my absolute favourite...

I read this last one in the bathtub when I got home. Sure it's a kid's book, but you're really missing out if you're too *ahem* grown up to read kid's books. A) you can say you read a whole book in 10 minutes and B) it has pictures. Enough said.

Do you still go to the library?

Confession: one time I had an $85 fine at the library and I was so ashamed and humiliated that I gave my mum my debit card and she went up to the librarian's desk and pretended it was her fine and she paid it off for me. I hid behind a bookshelf and watched the transaction.

My mum is pretty awesome.

Good Things This Week

1. Early morning Gus walks.

My goal this week is to actually get up at 7:00. Not hit the snooze until 7:30 (I know I am not alone in this...right?!). It's rather difficult to get out of a nice warm cozy bed especially when it is still dark out. I cannot wait till we set the clocks back and it is even DARKER (not). Oh dear. Anyway it just makes Gus's morning when I drag myself out of bed and take him for a nice long walk. He whines like a little piglet as soon as I get near the door hoping I'll take him. It's funny how happy it makes me to see him so happy. I imagine this is what parents feel like taking their kids to the park :)

2.Walking Dead

Eek! Can't wait to watch the new season! They finally introduced Michonne and I am eager to see her kick some zombie ass. The first episode actually starts tonight but a) We have no cable and don't feel like driving all the way to my parents and b) if I watch 2 hours of zombie before bed I definitely won't be able to sleep. I have an odd fondness/horror of zombies. It's hard to explain. I'll watch it on demand during daylight during the week sometime.

3. A new do

I had initially decided to get my hair dyed obre-like but then I came across this photo today and it was full on hair at first sight love.

4. Trying out a new recipe from Magnolia Bakery Complete Cookbook

I am a sucker for cookbooks. A lot of the time I don't even cook what's in them, I just like to read the little recipe preambles and the techniques used and such. I realize this is not normal. Oh man, and retro cookbooks? I die! Dave bought me Mastering the Art of French Cooking Set by Julia Child (!!!) for my birthday last year and I have yet to really make anything from it. On sick days and lazy Sunday mornings I lug them out and read random chapters.  Anyway, the point I'm trying to get at is I'm really looking forward to making something tasty to bring in to work.

5. Comedy Bar

Our friend Matt is performing in an improv show at Comedy Bar this weekend and we're pumped to drive down and go watch him do his thang.

6. Pumpkin Patch

One of my favourite things to do in the fall is go to a pumpkin patch. There's something about being bundled up in the country that is very nostalgic for me. Speaking of nostalgic, we're actually going to go visit the pumpkin  patch I used to go to when I was a kid! How awesome is that?! It's a little bit of a drive but I've been wanting to go back for ages now. I wonder if they will still have those pumpkin people in the outhouses? Or the giant dragon made of pumpkins that actually moves around!?! I am very VERY excited for this.

What things are you looking forward to this week?

I've just discovered Photoshop guys

Guys. GUYS. I've just discovered Photoshop. Just look how I transformed this seemingly bland photo...

Into this cool, thoughtful, provocative photo...

Oh yeah. And the layers in this bad boy. I hued and saturated it like you wouldn't believe.

Ok, so this technology has been around for ages but seriously, I only thought that super computer geeks (read my younger brother) could maneuver this thing. But DUDE. SO CAN I! Granted this photo took me a half hour to manipulate, but pretty soon I'll be conversing about channel mixer presets (?) and vanishing points (?) with the rest of them.

P.S Dave took this photo at this crazy record store in Kingston that his dad used to frequent when he was in college. It honestly was like stepping into an episode of hoarders!

My Tea Obsession & Sick Days

Can we just take a moment and talk about tea? Davids's Tea?  I never thought I'd see the day where I would rather buy new tea than new clothes. But, that day has come.  I like to keep my tea corner stocked with about 4 or 5 different teas at any given time and since I drink around 5 cups a day (oh man!) I find myself frequenting the tiffany blue store more often than I care to admit. Today I called in sick (flu, ick) so I thought I'd treat myself to some new tea. I'm sick ok!? I deserve new tea!! So I bought me some amaretto and more forever nuts. There's nothing better than new tea when you're sick.

Speaking of sick. Aren't sick days glorious? I got to sleep in until 10, take a bubble bath, listen to Glen Hansard and Bon Iver, dine on soup and tea, and leisurely read through my collection of cookbooks (we'll discuss this one at another time).  Don't you ever look forward to a good sick day? Where you can laze about and have absolutely nothing on your agenda for the day? There's something so simply wonderful about that feeling.

I guess the only downfall of sick days is being sick. But I can deal with that.

To Do: Thanksgiving Dinner

SO. This year I decided to be ambitious and cook my family's Thanksgiving Dinner (with the help of my brother). Ever since I got married I've been feeling very...adventurous in the kitchen? Domestic? Let's just say I have no qualms about my place being in the kitchen ;) I knew when I first started daydreaming about what I wanted to cook (yes, I daydream about these kinds of things) I knew I didn't want to cook anything traditional  No turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, or cranberry sauce. Where's the fun in that? So here is what I've come up with as an alternative:

(Click on name to see the recipe)

Roast Chicken (suck it, turkeys!) with root vegetables

Pumpkin Risotto

Roasted Cauliflower Puree with romano, chives and garlic

Garlic Bruschetta

Cider Caramel Apple Pie

Spiced Cider Whoopie Pies

Spiced Apple Cider

Yeah, so maybe a bit ambitious, but I have made versions of all these recipes before so hopefully it will all go smoothly. Also, I highly doubt if my food will come out looking as nice as the one in the pictures... Does it ever though?

Wish me luck!

Sophie Dahl: Be My Friend!

So I first fell in love with Miss Dahl after I saw her cooking show on the Food Network. I instantly knew that's what I wanted my life to look like; big open kitchen with fresh flowers everywhere, messy hair in a bun, a glass of wine/tea on the counter and cooking amazing food with equally amazing ingredients (read: cheese and bread!)

(Cool facts: Sophie is Roald Dahl’s granddaughter! Crazy! And she used to be a model! Not so crazy!)

Anyway, I was at a discount book store the other day and found the above book on sale for $7.99!!! Had to be mine!

The book is pretty lovely. I made her “Tawny Granola” tonight. I've never made granola before, but tawny granola? It sounded too perfect not to make. And save for the fact that my oven actually destroys everything I place inside it, the granola came out half alive and kicking with amazing taste! Here’s the recipe if you want to try it for yourself.

Sophie Dahl to me means:

  • eating good food made from local organic ingredients

  • cooking your own food all the time

  • cozy cup of tea

  • decadent food in moderation

  • lazy afternoons spent listening to Otis Redding and baking banana bread

  • never low cal or artificial anything

  • really enjoying food! looking forward to eating every meal of the day
